Drawing is often irterpeted as the magic connection between inspiration and expression. Drawing or sketching is an evolutionary process that is essential for expressing and communicating ideas or a creative composition. This also holds good for fashion drawing, with its characteristic nuances and relations with style. The exciting span and diversity of what constitutes fashion drawing today, is testimony to the creative vision of fashion designers and fashion illustrators. It reflects the range and scope of media now available, from a simple graphite pencil to sophisticated Cad Programs and the colour and fabric palate made available through various textile manufacturers. It also is the first step towards a creation process.

Fashion Drawing provides a visually orientated introduction to the different drawing styles, techniques and approaches that are taught at colleges and used extensively in the fashion industry. Understanding fashion proportions in relation to the anatomy of the standing figure is considered an important aspect while a sketch is being developed.

The role of computers to support and enhance the drawing process is also considered
and compared to more traditional hand-rendering / sketching techniques.

Perhaps the most defining characteristic of the fashion drawing process, and particularly the fashion sketch, is that it needs to be doable from all angles and more importantly, it should enable the designer or illustrator to express him or herself.

It should give rise to a personal drawing style, much like we have our own handwriting styles. Drawing can take time to establish and a lifetime to perfect. However, it’s worth perfecting and it does get better with practice!

Drawing starts with imagination before it expresses itself as a practical means of generating or communicating an idea. In fashion this can manifest itself in a variety of ways that are linked to social, artistic and cultural values or influences.

Types of Fashion Design Drawings

  • Flat Sketch or Fashion Flat. (Also known as technical flats)
  • Tech Sketch. (A flat sketch with details of the particular specifications of the garment)
  • Working Drawing ( Usually done for projects or  assignments but generally  done too)
  • Presentation Drawing ( Done during Exams or Business Presentations)
  • Fashion Croquis (A quick and sketchy drawing of a live model )

All students of Fashion need to have extremely good conceptualizing and sketching skills. A lot of reference is available in the internet. Additionally, since fashion is an art form, one needs to be visually strong in expressions that look different in approach, create a sense of uniqueness, and most importantly comfortable in adherence to the human body form.
